Sports Achievements

Stirling has a long, proud history of sporting achievements, a selection of which are listed below:

Watersport successes. Stirling has a long tradition of excellence in water sports and between the indoor aquatic centre of Stirling Primary and the high school’s indoor Water Polo pool, Stirling has long been a dominant force in the water. Stirling this year won the trophy for the best co-ed Water Polo team in the country; 23 Stirling players have been selected for Border Water Polo this year; and we have a regular exchange programme where we send students to Hungary, one of the leading Water Polo-playing nations in the world. A selection of the notable aquatic achievements of Stirling students while still at school:  in 1992 Tracey and Kerry Elliot formed half the South African Women’s Swimming team;  in 1997 Justin Parry won the U21 World Waveski Championships;  in 1997 Roslyn Johnston paddled for the South African Woman’s team in the World Canoeing Championships ; in 2003 Shane Fantham and Jason Page swam for South Africa in Brazil; in 2009 Delaine Christian played in the SA Woman’s Water Polo team at the World Aquatics Championships in Rome;  and in 2009 Alice McGregor won the Girls U18 SA Surfing title.

Drummies. For years Stirling was synonymous with drum majorettes and we dominated not only the provincial drummie competitions, but national and even world championships, being crowned Eastern Cape champions 18 times, South African Champions twice and World Champions twice.

Boys’ sport.  As a co-ed school, Stirling competes well with the top boys’ schools in the country.  We have recently beaten numerous boys’ colleges at Rugby, Hockey and Water Polo. We have a very strong hockey side with two members in the National U17 Hockey Squad, and Garth Hirst attained the impressive double of SA Schools Hockey and Cricket last year.

Multi-disciplinary sports. Students are encouraged to participate in adventure sports such as triathlon, biathlon, eco-challenge and the multi-disciplinary challenges on offer in Buffalo City.  Cindy Schwulst is the U18 World Champion in Biathle.
